I also chose to do a one on one interview for my primary research. Doing the one on one interview allowed me to plough deeper into the questions i asked. I chose to ask someone of a similar age to me as i feel that my generation use TV on Demand a lot so i knew i would be getting good answers and have no blanks.
These are my questions and anwers i got in my interview.
1) Why do you use TV on Demand?
Because it is easier it fits around my life and i can see anything i have missed during the week i can also watch whole series at once.
2) Which websites do you use to watch TV online?
I mainly use I player and 4oD.
3) Which website do you think is the best for quality?
I find that the best for quality is BBC I player because it has a clearer picture and there arent breaks.
4) Can you find all the programmes you want to watch on the internet?
There are some programmes i havent yet found online but i mainly get to watch what i want.
5) Do you watch TV on Demand more than normal TV?
I dont watch it more than normal TV but nearly as much as im out a lot so it gives me a chance to catch up on what i have missed out on.
6) What programmes do you watch online?
Eastenders
Ideal
How not to live your life
Dispatches
Hollyoaks
7) Are there any bad points you can think of using TV on Demand?
Sometimes adveritsements can be very long but other than that i cant reall think of any other bad things.
8) Would you pay to use TV on Demand?
It would depend on how much they would want to charge but I would consider it.
9) Why do you think it has become such a big thing?
Because i think at first people didnt really realise what they were getting out of it being completley free programmes any time any where.
10) Do you think it is going to get bigger in the future?
I think in the future it is going to get even bigger people will rely on it more and watch normal TV even less.

Focus Group
I did a focus group with four people who use TV on Demand I wanted to find out why people watch TV on Demand and if they watch it more than ordinary TV.
1) Do you find using TV on demand is easier than watching normal TV?
People find it an easier way to watch TV they find it convienient as it fits around their lives they dont have to be back at a certain time to watch your programme, and you have decided you want to watch it at that time or day not a set time.
2) What are the pro’s of TV on demand?
You can access it anytime anwhere all you need is an internet connection which most people have on their phones nowadays. It is reliable you know that if you have missed it on TV you havent missed it all together, also they find a lot of the time they will go online to watch something in particular and see something else they want to watch and its only a click away instead of a week.
3) What websites do you use to watch programmes?
BBC I player
4oD
Mega Video
The more well known websites and official ones are safe and virus free but you have to be careful with the less well known ones.
4) How long would you say you watch TV on demand weekly?
A couple of people in my focus group actually did watch TV on Demand more than ordinary TV because they would be out a lot and use the time they are in to catch up on things they missed.
5) Why do you choose to watch TV on demand?
They main reason they used TV on Demand is because of the fact it fits around them they can watch whle series all in one and its free!
6) Would you say you watch TV on demand more than ordinary TV?
Some people do watch it more but others in the focus group said only if they missed something they would catch up on it using TV on Demand.
7) Is the quality as good if you are watching the TV on the internet?
Sometimes it can be but others it can be very pixelated and fuzzy most people in the focus group said it would depend on your internet connection as to how good the quality is but it can be as good as TV.
8) Are there any programmes which you cannot access on the TV on demand?
You cant get every single programme on the official TV sites but if not found on them some people in the focus group would go on to the illegal ones to find what they wanted to watch.
9) Have you ever had a bad experience using TV on demand?
No one had really had a bad experience using TV on Demand it was just down to their internet connection.

Research Log
29.9.10
Today we continued doing our research.
I found some sources using Wikipedia and the BBC website
I googled the thing I needed to find out and looked through and went to the ones I thought suited it best. I think the BBC website is reliable.
1.10.10
I was ment to get research from a particular site but could not find anything matching my topic.
The website was www.intute.ac.uk/communication
I got info from www.stuff.tv.com

Example of Research.
Used backround info on dubstep to be able to go into more depth in research.
Proved his work by print screening examples
Throughout research he has shown his own opinion
At the beggining uses broad questions/ lists where he is going to look for his research/ how he used the links/ how he went into more depth with the research

Other forms of research
.Experiments- The good things about doing experiments are that the results are hard evidence you have got them so you know that they are true and factual. The bad things that you could find doing experiments, could be that you need a lot of people to carry them out on to get good results and not many people will help you.
.Participant Observation- This is where the researcher also takes part in the activity, this could be good because they will get an understanding of the product and gain the full potential out of it. It could be bad though because they are biased to it.
.Historical Research- It is good because you see how a product has evolved over time to keep up to date with technology, you get the whole background and contacts throughout doing this research. A bad thing might be that the product hasnt changed overtime.
.Rhetorical Analysis- The way something persuades the target audience by "saying theyre ugly" to buy there products. It is good if they do it in the right way for example if someone on telly is explaining the bad things about their skin and then say but this cream solves everything you may want to buy it. But the bad thing is if it is done wrong by someone saying it in a different way.
.Comparitive Analysis- This is good because you get to see something as a whole and break down the good and bad points. It could be bad if there is not much difference between two products.
.Competitor Analysis- Gives a good view of the market what your up against what you need to be better than and different from.

How and why does the Media use Research.
Things that you need to research in the media:
. Target Audience
. How many customers will buy into the product
. Expenses(e.g printing)
. Who or what companies are competition to you and your product
. Distribution and Advertisment promotions
I think that the media uses research because it is a simple and productive way of getting feedback on a product. Due to research being taken out in the media products and in particular films have actually been changed to make more money and as an outcome can be made better due to focus groups, for example I Am Legend changed the original ending and now on the DVD cover even boasts that it includes the "controversial" alternate ending.
Social media is another great way to gain information for a product from the target audience it uses social networking sites like facebook to get the most information. By using this source of research the researchers are able to find a community fitting the typical demographics for their product. For ecample Lynx used this to help them decide if they were going to launch Lynx Twist, in the end they did release it and due to there target audience helping them in the research stages they were able to be confident in its release knowing it was very likely to do well. Therefore you can see that doing this sort of research can determine the overall product, this has happened in many cases and it has happened to the following brands.
. Simple
. M&S
. Coca-Cola
. Lynx
Both small and big companies use these research techniques and although they can be very expensive to do it is more than likely they will be getting there money back through sales and profit on top of that. I personally think that it is a really good way to find out what companies need to know before releasing a product. It also gives them an insight into how well it will be recieved so if the outcome doesnt look very they will have the chance to not release it and not loose a large amount of money.
